Character
Character Name: Wolfram von Bielefeld
Canon: Kyou Kara Maou
Age: 82, but appears 15
Appearance:

Wolfram’s standard uniform is trim, proper, and functional, however his overall appearance reveals a sense of vanity: a jeweled chain over the cravat, or silver detailing in his ceremonial dress, for example. It also reveals a sense of pride in what he is, both mazoku and nobility, as well as what he does, a knight of in the king’s personal entourage as well as the king’s fiancée. Wolfram therefore presents himself with the utmost self-confidence and an air of superiority, well-bred and high class.

Canon Point: Season 3, Episode 1
History:
Wolfram is the third son of the 26th Maou of Shin Makoku, Cecilie von Spitzweg. At the time his eldest brother, Lord Gwendal von Voltaire was already old enough to go on missions out of the castle and his second brother, Conrart Weller, was the one he became closest to as a small child. All three brothers were born of different fathers, however,  canon makes no mention of the identity of Wolfram's father, and Wolfram mentions him only once briefly in a conversation concerning Mazoku myth. Conrart's human father, Danhiri Weller, was present while Wolfram was very young, but often only came to retrieve his own son for adventures in the human lands. It is never suggested that Danhiri acted as any sort of father figure to Wolfram and the constant separation between Conrart and Wolfram as Wolfram grew is just one of the many reasons why Wolfram came to nurse a deep resentment and anger towards his brother. In turn, he grew to idolize Gwendal as an example of a proud mazoku noble.

Wolfram became further embittered as a young man when horrible warfare came to Shin Makoku's borders but while his brothers went off to fight, Wolfram was kept isolated within the palace, tutored and pampered, but constantly longing to be fighting with his countrymen. The war lasted many many years, and by the time it ended, the rifts between the brothers seemed near irreparable. Wolfram, his own hatred towards the humans burning from the war, wanted nothing to do with his half-blood brother Conrart, who was otherwise praised as a hero by the common people of the kingdom. He instead kept to palace dealings and trotting after his big brother Gwendal, whom he did everything to try and impress, hoping for validation from someone he deemed worthy. Within the ranks of the aristocrats, Wolfram had made himself very popular for his beauty among the young men and women, but mocked by the warriors for his spoiled nature and habit of kowtowing to Gwendal.

It is then, when Wolfram was 82 (still a very young man by Mazoku standards) that the maou-to-be, 15 yr old Yuuri Shibuya from Earth, arrived in the kingdom, clumsy and by no means prepared for the task set to him. Yuuri's fumbling awkward nature and scrawny stature immediately earned Wolfram's cold judgement, and much to Wolfram's further dismay, it was revealed that Yuuri was not only clueless, but also half human, like Conrart. This was not something Wolfram was ready nor willing to stand for, and he raised up in disagreement, proclaiming Gwendal a much better candidate for king than a boy born a "dirty human woman." However, what he did not predict was Yuuri's reaction to his insults, and in anger the new king raised a hand to the angry prince and struck him across the cheek, not realizing that in this new world, such an action was actually a marriage proposal. Thus, it only added insult to injury and flamed Wolfram's anger until he challenged the skill-less king to a duel, a duel which by a strange stroke of fate Yuuri ended up winning.

Wolfram, shamed by his loss and by his newfound position as Yuuri's fiancee, changed tactics to save what was left of his reputation. He decided then if he had failed to defeat Yuuri, then he had to find a way to get Yuuri to go through with the marriage, otherwise being rejected by the king would be far too much shame for him to bare. And thus began Wolfram's pursuit of Yuuri, at first a self-centered chase for status that an overwhelmed Yuuri put up with due to the fact that he didn't take the engagement seriously and Wolfram could be quite frightening when Yuuri dared to suggest breaking it off.

However, as Yuuri began to prove himself a compassion and determined king, one who changed the very way the kingdom viewed the world beyond its borders, Wolfram found that he cared less and less about his reputation and more and more about staying at Yuuri's side. Wolfram's feelings turned into something genuine that went to the core of his being, and he began to follow Yuuri to every end of the kingdom, wherever his king would go so would he, and he would stand loyally on Yuuri's side, even when his own flesh and blood stood against them. Yuuri therefore became the pivotal factor in Wolfram's life, and his world came to be centered around him, even if Yuuri failed to return Wolfram's affections, being only a 15 yr old boy now king of a world he never knew before.

Their missions took them both to the human lands as well as to Earth, Yuuri's hometown and the headquarters of King Bob, the Maou's Earthly equivalent.

Sadly, in following Yuuri in a mission to obtain cursed boxes from the different corners of the world, Wolfram did end up being killed in a battle against the possessed Great King, the essential god of shin makoku, however he was revived when Yuuri succeeded in defeating the evil.

Season 3 begins then in a time soon after Yuuri has proven himself a worthy king by overcoming the Sousho that possessed the Great One, however during one of Yuuri's regular visits to Earth, the time lag between the two words starts to spread, and while Yuuri is only gone a few days in Tokyo, he is missing for several weeks in Shin Makoku. During this time, the council of aristocrats, spearheaded by Wolfram's uncle, Lord Waltorana, names Wolfram the 28th maou, despite Wolfram's firm belief that only Yuuri was the true king of shin makoku.

Personality:

Wolfram wears his heart on his sleeve and is prone to dramatic outbursts and tantrums as well as great acts of selflessness depending on the situation and what is at stake.

The first impression of Wolfram is that of a prideful, spoiled prince with a suffocating ego. Having been pampered in the halls of the palace his whole life, Wolfram did grow up with an ingrained sense of superiority and more than a bit of elitism as a proud mazoku noble. As the third-born son of the 26th Maou and a high-ranking member of one of the 10 aristocrat families of the kingdom, Wolfram is most familiar with the world of the wealthy and powerful, and what he has been taught to consider as the 'civilized' section of society.

However, Wolfram's overwhelming air of arrogance betrays a great deal of insecurity. Wolfram has always stood in the shadow of his older brothers, one a great tactician and strategist, and the other a renowned swordsman throughout the kingdom. He therefore struggles throughout the series to find his standing within his family as well as within Yuuri's immediate circle. He strives to find what it is that he can offer that his brothers do not, and this tension between his projected air of confidence and his lacking sense of self-worth often leads to bursts of frustration or tantrums when Wolfram fears he is being replaced or shamed. Also, for a man who seems entirely too flighty and self-centered, Wolfram reveals in Season 2 that he is actually quite self-aware and ashamed of his own flaws. Mostly due to the fact that they hinder his ability to be useful to Yuuri. Wolfram can thus become very self-loathing then when he does not meet the goals he has set for himself as a representative of his nation and moreover a loyal consort and knight to his king.

Starting from the end of Season 1 and developing through to season 3, Wolfram's love for Yuuri becomes more and more of a driving factor to his own maturation. In having something he cares for above himself and his country, Wolfram pushes away from the selfish image-obsessed young man who originally only cared about his engagement to Yuuri as a means of promoting himself and preserving his reputation, to a man willing to die for Yuuri and also willing to remove himself from the picture if that is what is best for the one he loves. By Season 3, Wolfram's priority in life has entirely shifted to encompass Yuuri's safety and happiness, even if that means sacrificing his own. And though the knowledge that Yuuri does not return his loyalty and love is a painful thorn in his heart, it does not change Wolfram's resolve.

Thus, overall the Wolfram of Season 3 has, as Yuuri himself says, "matured into a handsome man" and who Yuuri suggests could possibly be a good candidate for king himself.

Abilities:
Wolfram's maryoku specializes in the elements of fire, something he can summon at will so long as he isn't in human lands, because doing so outside of Shin Makoku is dangerous and can make him extremely ill. By this point in canon Wolfram has become quite skilled in controlling the precision of his fire powers and can use it in multiple different forms, such as a larger than life sized lion made of flame, as well as a spiraling fire that has a tornado effect. The form his fire takes tends to depend on how many opponents he is facing and for what reason.

Also, as a knight of the Shin Makoku kingdom and a noble son, Wolfram has been well trained in swordsmanship and horseback riding as well as skills necessary for stealth during the course of a mission.

However, Wolfram does have a weakness in being easily provoked or being too brash and acting too soon, so while he is quite skilled, his sense of timing and restraint are in need of work. In addition to this Wolfram is simply small in stature, and thus at a disadvantage in any battle without his maryoku or his sword.

Payment to Yubaba
Memory:
1. The memory of Susannah Julia von Wincott, Wolfram's tutor in his youth and an integral part of his development as a young man and a key part of the turmoil within his family and kingdom.

2. The memory of Yuuri finally returning to Shin Makoku, without this memory Wolfram has a sinking feeling that perhaps their king will not return.

3. Any memories of having gone to earth. He remembers that their king is from earth, but has no recollection of going there himself

4. Any memories of having forgiven Conrad. He will instead remember the anger and intolerance with which he treated his brother in the early episodes of season one.

5. His original defeat at Yuuri's hands after the accidental marriage proposal.

6. Any recollection he might have of his father

7. The redemption of his uncle on his mother's side, Lord Stoffel von Spitzweg, who played a large role in causing the war.

8. Any memory of being evil or manipulated by the possessed Great One prior to being killed.

9. Taking Yuuri into the warzone in his earliest days as Maou, for which Wolfram was harshly reprimanded by his eldest brother, due to the fact that he endangered the king.

10. The memory that his powers do not function well outside of mazoku land and could seriously hurt him or simply not work if he attempts it elsewhere

New Name: Rufus.

First Person:

[The video shifts and shakes a little as Wolfram still hasn't fully figured out how this works, but soon reveals at least the majority of the boy's face, and the bathhouse just behind him as he stands on the bridge]

I am looking for someone. [He starts then pauses as a pained expression passes briefly across his face] I have been waiting for them for a long time. I don't know if he'll come here, but if you see a boy in a black uniform, black eyes, and black hair...it might be him. Perhaps he would mention the word 'mazoku'.

[Wolfram's hand drops then, fingers curled around to cover the screen as his message is finished and he thinks it is done recording]

...hennachoko....where are you.

Third Person:

Wolfram stared at his palms, curled his fingers, then flexed them. Knuckles bruised, palms dry from work. It was different from the markers of swordfighting. These aches in his previously pampered hands felt without purpose, without meaning. He did not get this way by defending his country or his king. Just work for a lowly tyrant of sorts. Though working seemed to imply it was voluntary, which was the farthest from the truth.

His green eye slipped to the side to watch the others sleeping soundly around him as he remained sitting in his cramped bed. He had fallen so far so quickly, it seemed, from the halls of Blood Pledge to a room barely large enough for ten that now was packed to fit 15.

He couldn't decide what was worse. His hands or his new living conditions.

No. He knew what was worse. Yuuri. Where was Yuuri? Had he ever returned to Shin Makoku? Would there be enough people to protect him if Wolfram was trapped here toiling away for nothing?

Would he ever see him again?
